Outlets and switches

Outlets, switches and GFCIs in Albany-area homes

A dead outlet, a switch that crackles or a GFCI that won't reset is usually a small job done right. One electrician, one flat price, written down before we start.

When to call us

Any one of these is a reason to book a visit.

  • An outlet that has stopped working

Lamps and chargers go dark on one wall.

  • A GFCI that won't reset

The button pops back out or the reset does nothing.

  • A switch that is warm or crackles

Warm to the touch or a snap when you flip it.

  • Two-prong outlets

Older rooms with no ground for a computer or a TV.

  • Not enough outlets

A power strip on every wall.

  • A loose outlet that moves

The plate wobbles or the plug falls out.

What the visit includes

The same steps every time, so you know what happens next.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Booking

A person in our office asks which outlets or switches, in which rooms, and books an arrival window.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Arrival

The electrician arrives in uniform, puts on shoe covers at the door and lays a runner to the work.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Look and photos

They find the cause and photograph it before touching anything else, then show you on their phone.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Written ticket

The job, the flat price, what is included and what is not, on one page. You say yes before work starts.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Work and permit

One electrician does the work. If it needs a permit, we file it and the ticket shows the fee.

  6. 06

    Step 6: Cleanup and walk-through

They vacuum, take the old parts away and test the work with you.

How the price works for outlets and switches

  • One price for the job

Replacing a few outlets in one room is one flat price. A whole-house list of outlets is one price too, and you see it before we begin.

  • What can raise it

A box that is damaged or too shallow, wiring behind it that has to be corrected, or an outlet in a finished wall that has to be opened.

  • What is not in it

Drywall repair and paint after we open a wall, and any permit fee, which is passed through at cost.

Questions about outlets and switches

Can you replace outlets without turning off the whole house?

We turn off the circuit we are working on and tell you before we do. A few rooms may lose power for a short while.

Why won't my GFCI reset?

It can be the outlet, something plugged into it, or wiring down the line. We find which before we quote a fix.

Do you put in USB outlets?

Yes, in place of a regular outlet. You choose the style and it goes on the ticket.

Do I need a permit to swap an outlet?

Often a like-for-like swap doesn't. If the work does, the ticket says so and who files it.
